Kevin's Story of Hope

Kevin came to the Mission around Thanksgiving, sick from what alcohol had done to him. "I'd lost everything and had nowhere to go. I hadn't eaten, and I needed a safe place to sleep. I had a plan to commit suicide... even bought the gun."

Kevin's Story of Hope (Quicktime Version)

Kevin had been in jail, lost job after job because of his addiction, lost his car, and even caught his house on fire with a burning cigarette when he was too drunk to know better.

"I knew I had a problem," Kevin says. "I'd tried some of the 60- and 90-day programs, but nothing helped. I just got really frustrated and tired of losing everything."

Life on the street was scary. "It's just a matter of survival... there's absolutely no hope at all," he says. "I'd be dead without Portland Rescue Mission."

Now a graduate of the Mission's addiction recovery program, Kevin explains, "This is a 'make or break' situation. The Mission provides us a chance... an opportunity that we haven't had before."

Your gift today will help hurting people like Kevin break free from homelessness and addiction -- into life, freedom and hope.

Dominoes

Our lives are much like dominoes. Each domino is a choice -- for good or evil, right or wrong in our lives.

Dominoes (Quicktime Version)

Good choices lead to more good choices. Wrong choices lead to more wrong choices -- building momentum, cascading into a cycle of fear, pain, loneliness and despair. And the choices we make affect other people. Like a domino, our lives influence people around us -- for better or for worse. The choice is up to us.

Kevin's Story of Hope

"I decided to drink until I was dead," says Kevin.

Kevin's Story of Hope (Quicktime Version)

Like many men and women who come to Portland Rescue Mission for help, Kevin had completely given up. He would have gladly welcomed death.

"I had ruined the best things in my life," says Kevin. "I felt like dirt, so I was going to drink myself to death. I called it 'slow-motion suicide' because I didn't have the guts to pull a trigger."

Thankfully, Kevin found help at Portland Rescue Mission. Compassionate support from friends like you helped offer him meals, shelter -- and a new reason to live.
