Patrick's Story of Hope

Patrick is too young to spend his life wandering homeless and hungry.

Troubles in his teen years left him hurting and lost in a fog of addiction. With no food, no shelter and little hope, Patrick survived as best he could. Something inside him longed for change, but nothing he tried seemed to help.

Thanks to generous friends like you, Patrick now has a bright future ahead of him.

Tiffany's Story of Hope

Tiffany stumbled down the street, shivering in the bitter December frost. Her hands, stiff from the cold and skeletal from lack of food, quivered uncontrollably.

Homeless, Tiffany had been beaten and taken advantage of several times. At night, she would often try to sleep in someone’s backyard just to feel a little safer. Drugs offered her temporary relief from her pain, but always left her sadder, sicker, and more depressed than before.

Thanks to generous friends like you, Tiffany has graduated from New Life Ministries, and now has a bright future ahead of her.

Bill's Story of Hope at Thanksgiving

Bill had never been homeless before. He’d worked, married, and had several children during his life. He even remembers driving past Portland Rescue Mission and seeing homeless people outside waiting to get fed.

“I remember thinking, ‘Boy, I never want to be in that situation.’ Well, here I am.”

Alcohol had been a problem for Bill for many years.

Tina's Story of Hope

Tina’s father died in a tragic car accident when she was a little girl. But worse things lay in store when her mother remarried a monster. “Don” brought drugs, violence, and sexual abuse into their   home and dragged Tina’s mom right into his lifestyle.

When Don went to prison, young Tina was regularly forced to sneak him drugs. After he got out, he forced Tina to do terrible things.

Sean's Story of Hope

Sean felt like a nobody, sitting awkwardly as the “cool kids” talked sports and music. When someone started passing marijuana around, Sean didn’t even hesitate when it came to him. He’d grown up in a solid family and had always been a good kid, but struggled to fit in at his Illinois high school.

Full of shame, he hid his addiction. Sean’s secret began to grow, expanding to more dangerous drugs and slowly tearing a hole inside him.

Doug's Story of Hope

Doug shivered as he tried to sleep in the pouring rain. His life had fallen apart; he'd lost everything. He wandered to a gas station and begged a cup of coffee.

"I couldn't even drink it. Every time I'd bring the cup to my lips, it would spill because I was shaking so hard -- and not just from the cold. I was sad. Never thought my life was going to be like that."

One day Doug found Portland Rescue Mission. A hot meal and a loving conversation was the first step toward a total life recovery for him. Today, Doug has a bright future.

Jeremy's Story of Hope

Jeremy sat on the edge of the I-84 overpass. He stared at his feet dangling over the busy traffic below him, almost hypnotized, and felt the tug. Tears ran down his face as he worked up the courage to jump. "I couldn't pull myself to do it that day. But I knew I eventually was going to. It was just a matter of time."

Jeremy's Story of Hope (Quicktime Version)

Destroyed by addiction, Jeremy found little reason to live. Thankfully, he found The Harbor, the men's addiction recovery ministry here at Portland Rescue Mission.

In recovery, Jeremy has set aside the lies he'd come to believe since he was a child. For the first time, he has developed meaningful relationships - with staff, volunteers, and other men in recovery.
