John's Story of Hope

Hard was the only way John knew to do life. Growing up in a labor camp with an abusive home life and without a father, John looked to the tough migrant men around him as role models. “I thought being a man was to be macho, to cuss, to steal, and to belittle women. You don’t care and never show your feelings. And you sure don’t ever cry.”

To prevent himself from feeling, he numbed the pain of his crumbling marriage with alcohol and drugs. “After my divorce, alcohol was the only real companion I had for decades,” says John. “It meant more to me than my children and people I loved.”

Thanks to generous friends like you, John has become the new kind of man he always wanted to be, and now he has a bright future ahead of him.

A heartbreaking childhood marked by his parents’ divorce left him trapped in constant verbal and physical abuse by his mother. Foster homes only led to more abuse, profound loneliness and a complete lack of self-worth.

“I never had an example of love,” says Gary. “It’s taken me a long time to realize that I’m not worthless.”

Steve's Story of Hope

A Greyhound bus station is an unlikely place for a miracle. Steve had been living on the streets of California for over a year. Addicted for years, he’d long since sold his car and every last valuable he owned on one last drug frenzy. Steve had now given up on life. After manipulating every family member and friend for so long, he’d burned every bridge. There was nowhere else to turn. “The worst part of being homeless is that you’re around hundreds of people,” says Steve. “But you’re completely alone.”

Thanks to generous friends like you, Steve now has a bright future ahead of him.

Obi's Story of Hope

Obi was living the American dream. Growing up in Kenya was hard, especially in his abusive family. But now he’d fallen in love with an American girl, gotten married and moved to Portland where they would soon give birth to their first child.

The dream didn’t last. As a child, Obi coped with the abuse he received by getting high. That lifelong addiction still haunted him, destroying his marriage and his job. After just a few years in the U.S., Obi wandered homeless – and deeply hurting.

Thanks to generous friends like you, Obi now has a bright future ahead of him.

Kelcey's Story of Hope

Kelcey wanted a friend. He’d do just about anything to fit in, to be accepted and known.“I thought alcohol would help me be this nice guy, that it was going to help me relate to people,” says Kelcey. He’d invite people over to his house or to a bar, hoping they’d chat all night and have fun. But his plans always backfired. Inevitably, Kelcey would drink too much, become angry and destructive. “It was really just tearing me apart,” he says. “It made me even more lonely. I’d be that guy that no one wanted to be around.”

Thanks to generous friends like you, Kelcey has graduated from our New Life Ministries, and now has a bright future ahead of him.

Mike's Story of Hope

Before Mike came to Portland Rescue Mission, he was shocked at how difficult it was to survive while being homeless.  “I woke up one morning on the Burnside Bridge in the middle of January and couldn’t feel my toes. I’d been wearing the same clothes for three days and decided that I couldn’t do this no more.”

Finding a job seemed impossible. Dealing drugs was the only occupation Mike had ever known since he was a teen.

No escape, that is, until she walked through the doors at Shepherd’s Door.
